Every collection has stories, and ours has been writing itself since 2012. That is when the KaijuMonsteR blog went online — fourteen years of show reports, artist encounters, auction hunts, arrivals of pieces that made our hands shake. This post launches Grail Stories, a series that opens the archive and tells those stories properly.
What is in the archive
The backbone is our picture archive: more than 2,200 photographs spanning the scene — shows, shelves, close-ups of paint, piles of vinyl, the people behind the monsters. Behind those photos sit hundreds of posts: event coverage, release chronicles, and the quiet documentation work that made us a reference point for collectors. If a piece mattered to the European scene in the last decade, there is a decent chance a photo of it lives in our archive.
What the series will cover
- The hunts. How specific grails were found — the years of searching, the near-misses, the moment a legend finally landed.
- The shows. What Wonder Festival season and the event circuit actually feel like from a dealer’s side of the table.
- The artists. Stories from around our artist pages — the makers whose work fills the vault.
- The records. Crate-digging tales from the hip-hop side of the house, where test presses and obi editions have their own hunt stories.
Why stories matter in this hobby
Provenance is everything in collecting — our authentication guide and grail economics piece both make that case from the market side. But provenance is really just story with receipts. The figure that arrived via three countries and one frantic Yahoo Auction bid means more than the identical figure bought off a shelf. Those stories are what turn a collection into a history — and this hobby, at its best, is full of historians.
