Every sofubi collector in Europe eventually faces the same moment: the figure of your dreams is on a Japanese shop or Yahoo Auctions, and between you and it stands customs. The good news: importing is completely manageable once you understand the rules. The better news: there is a European shortcut. This is the guide we wish someone had given our customers before their first import.
The EU import rules, simply
Since July 2021, the EU abolished the old duty-free threshold for low-value goods. In practice:
- VAT applies to essentially every import, regardless of value. The old “under €22 is free” rule is gone.
- Shipments up to €150: VAT can be collected at checkout if the seller is registered under IOSS (many Japanese proxy services are). If not, the carrier collects it at the door.
- Shipments over €150: VAT plus possible customs duty (for toys, typically a modest percentage), plus the carrier’s brokerage fee.
- Carrier fees are often bigger than the tax. Postal services charge a modest handling fee; express carriers can charge €15–30 or more for the privilege of collecting your own taxes.
What this means in practice
That ¥30,000 figure is not the final price. Budget roughly 21% VAT (Netherlands rate) on the item plus shipping, plus any duty over the €150 line, plus a handling fee. A “bargain” auction win can arrive with a bill for a quarter of its value. Not a reason to stop importing — just a reason to calculate the true price before you bid.
Tips that save real money
- Consolidate shipments. One box of three figures pays one handling fee instead of three.
- Ask about IOSS at checkout. Prepaid VAT usually arrives faster and without door fees.
- Insure properly. Sofubi boxes get crushed; a damaged grail without insurance is a tragedy in two acts.
- Check restricted sellers. Some Japanese shops refuse EU shipping precisely because of VAT complexity; proxies solve that.
- Keep documentation. For resale or provenance, import records help prove an authentic purchase trail.
