ABOUT KAIJUMONSTER ART TOY GALLERY


KaijuMonsteR Gallery, founded in 2016 by Martijn de Zwart, is one of the leading high-end art toy and sculpture galleries in Europe with a focus on Japanese produced Sofubi works.

The gallery’s program includes important established artists such as Marmit, Target Earth, Dreamrocket, SkullHeadButt, Siccaluna, Amapro, Blobpus and Karzworks as well as such emerging notable talents as Algangu, KKfactory, Roughneck:7, Awesome Toy and SX-Toy.

KaijuMonsteR gallery continues to develop long-term relationships with artists, manufacturers, private collectors and corporations around the world, placing high end art toys in on display at many international events such as New York Comic Con, ToyConUK London, Dutch Comic Con Utrecht, Amsterdam Comic Con and Art Toy Culture Seoul.

We welcome the opportunity to work with both new and established collectors to help build their high-end art toy collections. Interview: Naoya Ikeda, Member of GARGAMEL


Naoya, would you mind telling us a little bit about yourself?

Naoya: Goedemiddag Martijn(or www.kaijumonster.com)!!!
I'm NAOYA member of GARGAMEL.
and I’m in charge of sculpture and painting(of Vinyls).
For sculpture, normally I sculpt to product of GARGAMEL.
and I sculpt to product are ​​in response to requests from other companies.
about "Painting" are regular products of GARGAMEL,SUPER7...etc.
also custom paint!!!


When designing and sculpting toys, where do you draw your inspiration from?

Naoya: ummmm...anytime... any situation...
I always get a lot of inspiration from toys that have been collected so far from  childhood, MANGA, special effects,and GAMEs.

Do you do all your own sculpts?

Naoya: No, My big brother(KIYOKA) is the chief director of the sculpture.

What does your studio look like?

Naoya: Looks like a...Study room....
Toys, Picture books, Manga, Magazines, Snacks...same as my private room.

Do you have any formal arts training?

Naoya: No,I don't.
It's all self-taught.

When people hear "Gargamel/NAOYA", what do you want them to think?

Naoya: ummmm...It is a difficult question...

What other artistic mediums do you dabble in?

Naoya: I like everything...painting,drawing,
prints,T-shirts,ZINE...etc.

What do you collect now a days? Could we see a shot of your collection?

Naoya: My main collection is Trans Formers.
 
What trends do you see coming up within the toy world? How will toy creating, buying, and selling evolve over the next few years?
 
Naoya: It is difficult question again...
I don’t feel a noticeable change in Japan.
However, a sudden increase in inquiries to GARGAMEL from around the world, especially in Asia and Europe.
so We are trying to enhance customer support.

Who are your favorite artists?

Naoya:Le Merde,Bwana Spoons, Scrappers,Kiyoshi Nakazawa,Martin Ontiveros,Arbito,David Horvath,Brian Flynn,Josh Herbolsheimer,Terrible whore,Chanmen...etc
 
What advice do you have for up-and-coming toy artists?

Naoya: anybody can get information from the Internet.
But anybody can't get "Sense" and "skill" from the Internet.
